Patient Case Study App

Overview

OSP partnered with Highfield Communications to create a digital case study app for global advisory boards. The goal was to move beyond paper-based workshops and provide healthcare professionals (HCPs) with an interactive, flexible tool to explore real-world patient cases — anytime, anywhere, even in locations with limited internet access.

The Challenge

Our client had been running successful paper-based workshops to drive discussion around patient management decisions for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections. While popular, the sessions were limited in flexibility, scalability, and adaptability for international audiences. The challenge was to make the workshops more engaging, portable, and interactive — without relying on WiFi or complicated setup.

Conclusion & Results

The Approach

Rather than simply digitising the existing cards, we designed a purpose-built “case study generator” that allowed facilitators to create and share unlimited patient cases, keeping each session fresh.

The app guided HCPs through patient scenarios in a realistic, linear way, unlocking new information — such as test results and medical history — over time, mimicking real-world decision-making. Participants could:

  • Select patient avatars and explore key information step-by-step.
  • Request virtual tests and review results over multiple “days” of care.
  • Record observations and generate summary cards for final group discussion.
  • Use the app independently at congresses or in facilitator-led sessions.

The app was designed to work offline, be intuitive to use, and transfer case studies across multiple iPads via QR codes. UX and UI experts ensured the design was accessible, non-branded, and simple to navigate, creating a flexible, future-proof solution for global use.

Key deliverables included:

  • Custom case study generator app for iPad
  • Offline functionality for global accessibility
  • Realistic patient scenarios with stepwise information release
  • Virtual tests and note-taking capability
  • Auto-generated summary cards for discussion
  • Facilitator tools for sharing cases across devices
  • UX/UI design and development
  • Non-branded, guideline-compliant build

The Impact

The app transformed advisory board workshops into highly interactive, engaging sessions. Facilitators could run multiple cases effortlessly, and delegates were able to work through realistic scenarios at their own pace. HCP engagement improved significantly, and discussions around patient management became more focused and meaningful.

“The creativity of the OSP team helped us develop an interactive case study app which enabled us very quickly in advisory board or group discussion settings to ensure all participants were on the same page. The app greatly improved physician engagement and allowed a much clearer dialogue regarding therapeutic decisions. This is exactly why I have been working with the OSP team for the last 15 years — they understand the challenges we face and deliver fantastic results.”
