Roche: Suite of Training Materials for Diabetes

Overview

Design and development of a suite of educational materials and eLearning modules for people living with diabetes. The programme was created following the release of the NHS Language Matters guidance, with a focus on clear, inclusive and supportive communication.

The Challenge

The client needed new educational content that reflected the principles of Language Matters, while remaining accurate, accessible and appropriate for a wide range of people living with diabetes.

The materials had to explain complex information clearly, work across different learning styles, and be suitable for both digital self-learning and face-to-face training environments. Content also needed to be future-proofed, avoiding references tied to specific or changing therapeutic guidelines.

Conclusion & Results

The Approach

We began by researching and writing the content, working closely with the client to ensure accuracy, tone and compliance. Once approved, the information was broken down into clear, bite-sized sections to make it easier to absorb for users from varied sociodemographic backgrounds.

Using design thinking and established learning principles, we shaped the user experience to support understanding and recall. A mix of video, infographics, illustrated content and interactive elements such as quizzes and drag-and-drop activities helped bring the information to life. The modules were built and published in the Elucidat eLearning platform.

Partway through the project, we were also asked to update a long-established structured education programme used in NHS-supported diabetes workshops. Originally developed in the 1990s, the materials required a full refresh to ensure they felt modern, inclusive and aligned with current medical guidance, while remaining flexible for future updates.

Key deliverables included:

  • Research and copywriting for all educational content
  • UX and learning design for eLearning modules
  • Interactive features including quizzes and drag-and-drop activities
  • Process illustrations and image research
  • Design, build and publishing of eLearning content in Elucidat
  • Refresh and redesign of six printed training manuals
  • Workshop flipcharts, certificates and display materials
  • Facilitator manuals and patient workbooks

The Impact

We delivered 10 compliant, interactive eLearning modules covering topics such as food labelling, medication, foot care and blood glucose monitoring.

Alongside this, we created a tactile toolkit for face-to-face workshops, including a 45-page flipchart activity, questionnaires, a 36-page facilitator manual, three patient workbooks (12–45 pages), and completion certificates.

The client was extremely positive about the outcome. The eLearning programme has since been published for focus group testing, with plans for wider public release, supporting people across the UK to better understand and manage diabetes.

“The modules are looking good, superb job and thank you for bearing with us”
